Which Type of Martial Arts is Right For You?

With the popularity of Mixed Martial Arts like the UFC, Bellator, and others and the proliferation of martial arts portrayed in most blockbuster movies these days, it’s easy to understand how potentially confusing it can be when it comes to choosing the martial arts that’s right for you.

People often wonder how to decipher which martial arts training is best for their kids or for their family. While there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” martial art, there are some helpful guidelines you can use to help make the choice that’s best for you and your family.

First, consider the curriculum being taught

Some martial arts are more combative-based while others are more serene with controlled movements. Some martial arts favor a standing position while others prefer to be on the ground.

Regardless of the style, you might agree that any martial art can be beneficial if the curriculum is geared toward keeping a person sweating, smiling, and skilled. That said, the content alone isn’t enough. This leads to the next important point to consider when choosing a martial art that’s right for you.

Second, get to know the instructors

You have to know, like, and trust the instructors because martial arts is unlike any other activity. This is a journey of dedication and commitment. If you and your family feel an immediate connection with the instructors and staff, great! That is paramount! After all, you’re entrusting them to train you and your family.

You’re probably already aware that any new activity (including martial arts) can be met with some initial resistance… especially from kids. Experience has shown that even adults feel uncomfortable at first. That’s okay! As long as the instructors and staff support you, your kids, and your family’s goals, keep going! In fact, the more you attend classes the more quickly you’ll discover how much you and your family enjoy the martial arts when the instruction resonates with you.

Lastly, the training facility is a direct reflection of the culture of the academy.

Imagine if you could get the inside scoop on the martial arts academy before committing to years of training. You can! And here’s how: pay attention to how you’re greeted (or not greeted). Notice how they talk to you and the overall maintenance and condition of the facility.

  • Do they use respectful language like “sir” or “ma’am”?
  • Does the academy have a structured system to handle new students?
  • Do they use current communication technologies to connect with you?
  • Is the academy organized and free of unnecessary clutter?
  • Do they clearly display the gear you’ll need in your training?
  • Is the equipment safe and free of damage?
  • How does the academy feel? Inviting? Well lit? Comfortable?
  • Is there a clear path of training progression displayed?
  • Does the facility appear well kept and cleaned regularly?

Culture matters.

In fact, most people would agree that having a sense of belonging is a top priority. Martial arts training is a way of life and you want to make sure you’re picking your tribe, your people, your community.

Sooner or later when you decide it’s time to start your martial arts journey, you’ll have the tools you’ll need to make the right decision for you and your family and best of all you’ll have a lot of fun too!
